Is this style of therapy and coaching for you?

My style of working is very educational,  prescriptive and analytical, therefore I do the majority of the talking (certainly in the early sessions) so we can look at your problems from new perspectives rather than going over old issues again and again, this way we can explore new ways of thinking, responding, behaving and emotionally reacting to the challenges of life.

At some time on the journey we may need to go over past issues, however, I am more interested in helping you let them go rather than trying to understand why these things happened and exploring new strategies you can use to stop similar things happening in the future.

Typically people who choose to work with me are intelligent thinking types who have quick and creative minds and just need somebody to show them new ways to think – I see it as my job to help you to fix yourself rather than my job to fix you, by working in this way it ensures that you have all the psychological tools you need for the future so you can keep yourself in an emotionally calm and stable place.

Your personal growth journey

The best type of therapy – is the one that works for you, so, I use a range of techniques including; psychology, personality profiling, NLP, CBT, rapid cognitive therapy, mindfulness, emotional intelligence, meditation, spirituality (non-religious) and, of course, a lot of common sense.

I call this integrated style ‘Mind Therapy’ and we will use the techniques that feel right for you and the ones that stimulate the changes that you want, in addition, I feel that it is important that you learn many of these techniques for use on yourself, now and in the future. Typically the process follows these steps:

  • Understanding the mind body relationship
  • Quietening the mind and learning what thoughts are and how to interrupt them
  • Recognising who you are at a genetic DNA level rather than who you think you are
  • Removing unconscious sabotaging thoughts and behaviours
  • Deciding what you what, what you need to change and how to do it.
About me John Glanvill

I would describe myself as a logical, scientific, sensible, empathetic and highly intuitive therapist, who has a wealth of  experience working with undesired unconscious emotions and changing behaviours that are not taking you in the right direction. Before retraining to become a therapist I was an engineer for many years and worked all over the world, this science based education has helped me to add structure and process to art of applying therapeutic interventions and seeing problems from the context of the system not the part.

For many years I have been working with people, from all walks of life, helping them find solutions to specific challenges in their personal and professional lives – Teaching them techniques that allow them to more fully understand how the unconscious mind works and to recognise where emotions come from and how to harness their power.

I specialise in treating anxiety and depression based emotions and teaching people how to foster a new relationship with themselves that leads to more calmness and self confidence. By helping people to lessen anxious feelings, begin to love themselves more and gain a clearer vision of who they are and what they want, other issues like weight loss and insomnia naturally begin to correct themselves.

Understanding anxiety, OCD and panic attacks

In my experience, very few people have a deep understanding of what anxiety actually is and how to really overcome it (rather than managing the anxious feelings). In reality the majority of anxiety disorders have a clear structure and (if you are prepared to work at it) it is very possible to break its grip and find more emotional calmness. Key observations are:

  • Anxiety is a problem of thinking and not of the body (I know it sounds wrong)
  • The body’s anxious feelings are (usually) a normal emotion happening at the wrong time and the wrong intensity
  • The body can use extreme biology to grab your attention and can make any part of your body do anything!
  • Anxiety won’t kill you, but not fixing it can make you ill
  • Working on the symptoms of anxiety won’t fix you – you need to work on the underlying unconscious triggers
  • Feeling exhausted, indecision, feeling unmotivated and wanting to stay at home all recede when anxiety is fixed – they are symptoms not causes
  • Quieting your mind is key to recovery
  • Letting go of trying to control life and others is key to recovery too

What is my personality type?

We are not all the same! Often we are not even the same as our own brother or sister, let alone our parents! This means that we may think differently to others, our needs may be different from those around us and our behaviours may differ from others too.

By understanding this and exploring who we really are at a deep unconscious level we can observe (within ourselves) the conflicts between what we desire (DNA) and what our mind thinks we should do (ego / conditioning).

This recognition of who we are and which personality type we are (and the personality of those around us) allows us to explore new ways of communicating and being that are in a lot less emotional conflict. It also allows us to accept our strengths and accept our weaknesses without beating ourselves up.

What is my next step to get help?

Therapy and education are only one aspect of the journey because if you can overcome anxiety, numbness, procrastination,  low self-esteem (fill in your issue) – what are you going to do with your life?

What about relationships? What about children? What about your career? Who do you want to be? How do you want to live? What is important to you?

To be honest, this is probably the hardest part of the journey, to discover what you want and drum up the courage and desire to make it happen. In reality it is more about dismantling the beliefs and thoughts that stop you taking action! Either way, I can help you move towards the next phase of your life, whatever that may be
